Thought it would be good to find out what you guys think was the best punk album and why. I know it a tough question but i guess im more interested to find out what your reasons are for your choice.

It would have to be Feeding the 5000 I guess. To me the Pistols were about causing shock and outrage, but Crass were about creating something positive rather than just destroying, and their first album was their manifesto.

I beg to differ. Nothing can touch the Clash's first album, though 'imflammable material' runs it a very close second.

Yeah, i agree with you there Graham, i was into the whole crass movement but wouldn't have been if it hadn't been for the Clash first album. So what makes a great punk album? is it the message thats most important or is it much simpler than that. I loved Feeding of the 5000 and thought it was released at a time when punk was loosing its way, but on the other hand, 'Do it dog style', 'Another kind of blues', 'The Crack' 'Another music...'were also great punk albums, amongst many too numerous to mention. I guess it can come down to what each individual wanted punk to mean to them. Anyway if you can't name one give us your top 3 or 5.

for me its damned, damned, Damned, American style given a very British edge and Dirk wears white sox by The Ants for progressiveness.

Damned,Damned,Damned was the best one in my opinion. Not a single 'filler' track and a great powerful sound. I also really rate 'Live at the Roxy', various, and 'The Scream'by Souxsie and the Banshees. The second album, 'Music for Pleasure' by the Damned was a real disappointment, although I bet you the darling Mr Graham Burnett, who just keeps looking younger and younger, really rates the Lol Coxhill sax playing on that particular album?

So how about the worst? Maybe Sham 69/Thats Life or 'Jilted John/True Love Stories(I think). The funniest....got to be 'We are the League/Anti Nowhere League.

Well thats easy, the worst has got too be Cut The Crap by The Clash. I think the 2nd Damned album has some good song but badly produced.

yeah, Steve, thats another good one: Live at the Roxy? or Farewell to the Roxy? would go out to the shed and check, but its frikkin blowng a gale and freezing out here! Worst album, not sure but biggest disapointment was spending 3 quid on Crossing the red sea by the Adverts, at Golden Disc. few killer tracks, but packed out with some light weight filler. Shame, they had a good look.

It shows how personal all this is, because I love Crossing the Red Sea - its packed full of great songs as far as I'm concerned. I think most people would acknowledge NMTB as the daddy of all punk albums and thereafter its a matter of taste. Personal favourites include the first Chelsea album, Rocket to Russia and Inflammable Material, but I'll probably stick something else on the turntable and that will become my favourite. Ah well ...
My actual favourite punk album of the moment, although its outside the period covered by this site is Rancid (2000). An amazing band!

TBH I don't think I've ever actually heard the track with Lol Coxhill on... Mr Coxhill also plays on onew of Penny Riubaud's post-Crass albums, and according to Mr Rimbaud he always wanted to play on stage with Crass... Another unlikely collaboration I would have loved to have seen was Steve Hillage (guitarist of Gong) jamming on stage with Sham 69.... I bet that confused alot of people...

Graham, do you think he was wearing 'Lace-up boots and cord-er-oys' ! I have to agree, my favorite album changes on a weekly basis. First Gen X album is rating highly at the mo. Think it has something to do with keep visiting the 100 punks site!!
