The Jam may well have been labled a Mod Band but i still associate them with the punk scene as a whole. They were instumental in forcing the change that we so badly needed. I dont think it matters what sort of band we labled them as they produced some kick-ass songs. Billy Hunt and Tube station were amazing tunes, and so were so many others. Punk was about being different and writting songs with a message. I think The Jam acheived this in everyones eyes. Yep, I would go along with all of the above... Not so sure about the next bit, though, about The Exploited and Sham 69 being skinhead bands!

What i meant was they were followed by skinheads, whether they liked it or not! Mind you gotta say that the worst gigs i went to for skins was, Clash at the Roxy and SLF at Hammersmith Plais. The Clash did nothing, but at SLF Jake Burns stopped mid-song and screamed at the lighting blokes to shine the spotlight on the skins that were biffing all the punks. Just as well, coz i had just fallen on the floor in the skirmish and was within a Doc Martin of gettin the living snot bashed outta me. Top bloke!

SLF at Peterborough was stopped after Skins went on the rampage during "White Noise" thinking it was a Far Right anthem . They had that ability to go over peoples heads with their lyrics did SLF. I still love the story about them being pestered by the Provo's to do a song about Bloody Sunday , to the extent that at one stage they were threatened. So they did including the line "Theres nothing to do a Bloody Sunday"

Glad to see someone noticed my deliberate mistake. 'Brand New Cadillac' on Sandinista! Ok, it wasnt deliberate and I'm a f'ing idiot. Anyway, what I think they(and by 'they' I mean Joe and Mick) were trying to do was make a triple album, full of all sorts of different stuff, and let people choose what they liked and put it on a tape. Later on Joe did the same thing with the Mescaleros, except by then he had listened to so much music from all round the world that he knew what was worth recording. A kinda distillation. Anyhoo, in case anyone thinks I'm a Clash snob or nerd, Inflammable Material was top notch, as was All Mod Cons, as was Power in the darkness(TRB) Damned,Damned,Damned, Electric Warrior, Aladdin Sane, For Your Pleasure(Roxy Music) and even Thats Life and We Are The League(Strictly for laughs though). To quote Joe from 'Diggin The New',
"Always lookin back down the track, saying can you spot one more detail, Jack"
I guess that's what we are all doing on this site. What the f**k. Some things, and some times are worth looking back at, aren't they?

Not forgetting NMTB, XRay Spex's first one, ditto The Stranglers, The Members, Leyton Buzzards, Angelic Upstarts, The Undertones, anything by The Stray Cats, Buzzcocks, Ruts and UK Subs. Also 'Another girl another planet' by the Only Ones. Honorable mentions to Chelsea, The Skids, The Lurkers, The Adverts and definitely The Convicted. Paul Eves for best male vocal!

Alaninoz I know their Aussies but do the Living End float your boat too ?
I was introduced to them by a nate of mine a few years ago and thought they sounded like every punk band in the world, Certainly beat Green Day in the "New Punk" stakes

I've got the album "Roll On" and it's quite good...
A couple of my mates are really into them and, apparently, their first album - "The Living End" is the best one...

Personally Damned Damned Damned truly raw still sounds good today.NMTB was great but alittle to polished,Gen x 's 1st was one i loved great musicians great songs. The Clash's 1st maybe 2nd best very raw but good musically. There were so many good ones, hard to define punk when all these records were so different to each other

Hey Purple, gotta bone to pick. What did you hear about the Clash that's so terrible. Was it that they were one of the first punk bands to take a political stance,to sing about the things that were real to them, that they never lost touch with their true followers, that they developed their music and didn't get stuck in a rut like so many of the early punk bands, that right up until the day he died,Joe stuck to his principles, writing music that, though he knew it wouldn't change the world, hoped it might change some opinions. Of course I'm blinkered,narrow-minded and very old,but can I ask you something....Who the f*ck are Crass?
