...'Focal Point Gallery has an internationally recognised program and we have worked with a range of established and emerging artists on projects over the last year. We're currently very excited to be collaborating with Hadleigh-based artist Mat Do on an event which will take place during our next exhibition 'Thames Delta', a show about music and musicians who have roots in Essex.
Together with Mat we're planning an all-day 'A&R' event called SAAL-HALLA, which will take place on Saturday 5 May 2012 between 11:30am and 4.00pm at the Kursaal on the eastern esplanade. The idea behind this event is to invite a wide range of people working or involved in music from Southend and its surrounding areas to come and represent themselves and what they do. Just to give you a sense of who we're asking, we're approaching musicians, bands, photographers, writers, fan-clubs and societies, publications, recording studios, club night promoters, local businesses, merchandisers and DJs, amongst others.
SAAL-HALLA will take the form of a trade convention or indoor market where each participant will have their own table to do whatever they want with, be it selling, exhibiting, storytelling or promotion. We're also planning a series of performances by artists and musicians throughout the day (including Turner-prize nominated artist Mark Titchner and John Hannon/Liberez) as well as inviting DJ's to provide a soundtrack to the days proceedings themed around Essex's celebrated and ongoing contribution to popular music. Imagine a cross between the indoor day-market at the Electric Ballroom in Camden and All Tomorrows Parties at Butlins in Minehead - that's what we're going for!
We'd like to make it an eclectic, engaging and interesting day where people can meet, network and promote what they do. Overall it'll be a fantastic opportunity to show people what's going on in the regions vibrant music scene, and we have the added bonus of it being a bank holiday weekend too so we're anticipating a large audience. The event will be promoted nationally and internationally through Focal Point Gallery's press and marketing contacts...'
