It is only just over a year since Walter Lure's triumphant return to these shores for his legendary gig at the 100 Club on 14.10.10, yet the level of anticipation for tonight’s show at The Purple Turtle is no less intense. With great support from The Healthy Junkies and the DeRellas, the atmosphere was building to fever pitch before Walter had even hit the stage. With everyone from members of The Lords of The New Church, Texas Terri Bomb, Marionette, Johnny Throttle, Bermondsey Joyriders, The Priscillas, The Duel, The Phobics etc to the editors of Fear and Loathing, Bubblegum Slut etc all in attendance, the venue was packed to bursting as Walter Lure and his band hit the stage.
As before, he had Oz and Birchy (ex-Gunfire Dance) on Drums and Bass, and Jez Miller (ex-Pleasure Victims) on Second Guitar. The sound was powerful and solid, and the guys seemed even tighter than last year. Playing a full set consisting mainly of Heartbreakers and Waldos songs, each song was rapturously received and their classic timelessness was felt all the more. 'Let Go', 'Pirate Love', 'Sorry', 'Get Off The Phone', 'Seven Day Weekend' (With Paul from Urban Voodoo Machine on Guest Harmonica), 'Too Much Junkie Business', 'One Track Mind', ‘London Boys’, ‘Count Down Love’, 'Born To Lose', truly amazing...Then a special guest was announced, and ex-Heartbreakers Bassist Billy Rath came onstage, strapped on a Bass and they all played 'Chinese Rocks' and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Incredible. Billy had long been MIA so it was great to see him again (I don't think I'd seen him and Walter together onstage since the Heartbreakers reunion shows back in '84?)
Following the first encore of Jerry Nolan's classic R'n'R song 'Take a Chance on Me', cries of 'Billy Rath!' broke out from the audience and it was lovely to see him take the stage once more as they played a great version of the Heartbreakers cover of 'Do You Love Me'. It brought the house down, and rightly so. Fantastic!
