Southend Punk is very sad to announce that Poly Styrene (born Marianne Joan Elliott), the seminal vocalist for X-Ray Spex, has died at the age of 53 of breast cancer. She had released a new album - 'Generation Indigo' only last month. An official statement on her death said: "We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places." She had first revealed she was battling breast cancer earlier this year in an interview about her relationship with daughter Celeste. Poly spent her final days in a hospice in St Leonards-On-Sea, East Sussex. Her daughter Celeste is herself a musician, fronting the group Debutant Disco. (They performed as support to X-Ray Spex at the legendary Roundhouse celebration gig) Rest in Peace Poly... 03.07.57 - 25.04.11 www.southendpunk.com/html/polystyr.htmlFor Further Information: www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/apr/26/poly-styrene-dies-aged-53www.nme.com/news/x-ray-spex/56316en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poly_Styrene
