The Scala in Kings Cross hosted an interesting event last night, as it celebrated the return of Anne Marie Hurst (ex-Ghost Dance, Skeletal Family), alongside Rubella Ballet, Lilygun and Nessus Red. Nessus Red and Lilygun provided suitably atmospheric sound scapes to inaugurate the event, but it was Rubella Ballet whom first really lit up the stage. A very powerful five piece still, it was wonderfully refreshing to see Sid pounding the skins in true Rubella style. He'd done an excellent job playing with the reformed X-Ray Spex, but the tribal style he does so well is most at home in his Rubella setting. Zillah was on fantastic form and it’s easy to forget how good her vocals were/are. Excellent! They wet down very well with the capacity crowd and left a great impression. Anne Marie Hurst's band had a great atmosphere to build on, and seeing this was her first London show for nearly two decades, expectations were high. The band played really well, and had an especially great rhythm section. Featuring a couple of other ex-Skeletal Family members, the set and sound was more orientated toward this era of songs, with 'Promised Land' being their best number. The highlight was probably hearing 'The Last Train' and 'A Deeper Blue' from her time with Ghost Dance, and it was wonderful to see Anne-Marie back and hear vocals soaring once more.
