I have a crafty feeling that some of you on here were/are civil servants who worked in alex House, am i right? Marcus, did you used to work on 2nd floor of Alex, circa 1982? And Graham, did you used to go out with a girl called Penny? As for Steve, I remember amazing you with my psychic powers when I correctly guessed your date of birth on the first occassion I met you! I also remember watching Autumn Poison (and others) up the Grand on a Sunday night in 1983.

(Well, OK, that is a complete lie; the cosmetic surgery is a dead giveaway.........) Yeah, I used to run with the Alex House posse * * sblack person * * God knows on what floor though; I could only just remeber what building I was supposed to be in most of the time. I can't quite place you though. Were you one of the punters for our Nasty "franchise" which was quite successful?

If you are the Marcus I am thinking of, you used to work on the 2nd floor as well. I sat next to Petrina. I used to be in charge of the stationery cupboard at one point!!!! Think the responsibility went to my head a bit.

I think that if you are head stationery monitor, the only way is down Did you used to hang out with Charlie Neale? Apologies, but perhaps I wasn't your best customer for staples or something! I have an appalling memory at the best of times and it's only by a fluke that I remember this site....I always blamed it on the Tippex thinners you know.... It may be a long shot, but if you found a ruler with "the Kippars rule" written on it in those days; it's mine Did you know Chris Kemp too?

Ah yes I remember you kay, and that you were a mod. I think you came round tothe famous 'Ivanhoe' collective house in Palmeira Avenue a few times. Do you now whatever became of penny? I've never seen her around since those days.
PS. Judging by your avatar you are a Linux user. I'm quite a new convert, using Ubunu 6.06...

Yes Graham, I did indeed go round to Ivanhoe on several occassions! Do you remember the old boy who lived downstairs? was he called Sinclair or something? I don't know what happened to Penny, I have a feeling she moved out of the area, but can't be sure.

I could never forget Mr Sinclair and all the adventures involved with him! He could do with a thread, nay an entire forum, all to himself... "Do I have to kiss you on the mouth again, you bastard!!!"

Graham and I started out in Portculllis - a better class of Civil Service building! We used to use/misuse the internal mail and I'm partly convinced that's where Graham's artwork started... In my fleeting involvement at the outset of New Crimes we were hauled in front of one of the big cheeses who objected to Sinyx's "comments" about the Queen... There were all sorts of people linked to Portcullis and Alexander. I worked with Vints for a while in the Control Seat - and without an exhaustive list turning this into fiendsreunited I met Graham, Julian and Jeff Danahay et al.
Does anyone remember Steve ? he produced a fanzine called Skatelake. He was moddish and wrote in that 'zine about the Cockney Rejects...some of their fans were "looking" for him one day in Nasty...I overheard their conversation, kept schtum and scuttled back to work with the news...
Oh, and Marcus, it was never Tippex...it was Snopake and came in glass bottles - one for the white stuff and one for the thinners...sniff sniff

Steve wrote in Skatelake fanzine something like that Crass were a bunch of w***ers who only apealed to art students. Various members of Crass found that really amusing for some reason...

Ah the joys of Customs and Excise internal mail! I remember on another occasion sending a Chris fake 'communique' by the Angry Brigade that I'd written and signed it with the name of some really high up bod in C&E. Unfortunately this note got intercepeted and the person in question (forgotten his name now but it may have been Elmer Fudd??) was not best pleased. I got hauled into his office and he basically said that he didn't mind the inernal mail being used to send subversive documents up and down Victoria avenue, but would prefer that I didn't attribute such documents to him...

BTW, does anybody here read 'The Idler' magazine www.idler.co.uk/ ? The last issue contained a piece of mine that I'd contributed to the Idler message board about my adventures in Customs and Excise, I reproduce it below; "I must admit this was a long time ago, when i 'worked' for the big Customs & Excise and VAT offices in Southend (one of several thousand employees spread amongst about 10 large office blocks in the town) and I was blatantly taking the piss out of the flexi-time system that operated. The 'core hours' were starting any hours between 7.30 to 9.30, lunch between 11.30 and 2.00, and finsihing any time between 3.30 to 5.30, and you could go up to 11 hours either way in 'credit' or 'debit'. I used to regularly turn up at 10, go to lunch at 11, come back (often pissed) at 2.30 and go home again at 3.30, and always had the full 11 hours 'credit' on my timesheet. I only ever got caught once in the seven years I worked there, the line manager told me he'd been taking a note of my arrival and departure times and would speak to me about my timeshet on the Monday morning. This was a Friday afternoon, and I was pretty worried all through the weekend as timesheet fiddling was a sackable offense. However when I arrived on the Monday morning it turned out he'd had a heart attack and died that weekend! Phew, that was a close one!!! When I was actually at work my main activities seemed to consist of writing songs for the band I was in, using the photocopying facilites to print my fanzine and gig posters, and wandering off to other offices to idly chat up various office girls around the buildings that I fancied. No one ever seemed to notice what I was doing, and I don't think I did a single stroke of actual work in at least the last 2 years that I was there. I understand things are alot tighter now though..."

Graham and I started out in Portculllis - The Orwellian connotations of the fact that the office I worked in was Room 101 was never lost on me... Here's a song what i wrote about working in portcullis house back in 1979/80 for my first band 'Enola Death' (later Autumn poison)... As you'll see I've gone to great pains to anonymise the names of any recognisable individuals who might otherwise be offended... ROOM 101 H*n*ssey is a f**king shit I'd like to stuff him down a pit He really is a f**king slob I wish he'd shut his f**king gob P*tter's only got one eye* The sight of him makes me cry All he does is dole out the pay "f**k off P*tter!" is what we all say! Room 101 is a f**king hole The temperature is always cold the bosses all like to pose around i'd rather work as a f**king clown! *This was true, in fact his other eye actually fell out one day in the office, I remember it well!
