'The X-Rays were penetrating through the latex breeze, Synthetic fibre see-though leaves fell from the Rayon trees'. Last night the world truly did turn Day-Glo for an hour or so as X-Ray Spex blasted and levitated the Roundhouse in Camden. Following her daughters band - Debutante Disco - then Goldblade and a DJ set from Don Letts, Poly Styrene and X-Ray Spex took to the stage and opened with a splendidly ragged 'Oh Bondage! Up Yours!' and proceeded to play their way through Germ Free Adolescents, reminding everyone how brilliantly potent these songs were and still are. 'Genetic Engineering', 'I am a Cliché, 'Identity', 'Art-I-Ficial', 'I am a Poseur' and 'Germ Free Adolescents' really stood out, and personal favourites 'I Can't do Anything', 'Lets Submerge', 'Warrior in Woolworths' and 'Day the World Turned Day-glo' were sublime, with Poly's voice really radiating out. The band finished with an even more revved up Oh Bondage! and played Day-Glo again too and the crowd really didn't want them to leave. I was very impressed with the band as a whole too, especially Sid from Rubella Ballet on drums - (providing a bit of a SouthendPunk connection even, as he played drums in The Sinyx briefly if memory serves) - and the new sax player was superb. Zillah from Rubella and Poly's daughter Celelste came onstage to join in on the Oh Bondage encore. A great celebration indeed! www.southendpunk.com/html/xrayspex.html
