Had an interesting chat with Dave Tulloch (Machines co-manager, Strange Stories co-founder, Van Gogh promoter) today. We were talking about early punk gigs in the area, and he said some of the earliest, and best, that he saw were at The Double Six in Basildon in '77 / '78, and these included The Rezillos, The Only Ones and Doll by Doll (all separate gigs). I wondered if anybody else here went to or remembers these gigs, and/or knows the exact dates for the timeline?
I'm planning to add The Double Six to 'The Places of Punk Significance' section, so it'll be good to know the above info in advance if possible.

I remember The Rezillos playing the Double Six as it was the first gig I ever tried to go to. I say tried because I was turned away at the door for being too young. I was maybe 14, and looked about 12. In order to have enough money to get in, I'd walked from Horndon On The Hill. I have a small history of being turned away from gigs in the area around 77/78. Several times from the Double Six and a couple of times from the Pink Toothbrush. First gig I actually gained admission to, Alberto Y Los Trios Paranoias at the Towngate Theatre.

I saw a few bands at The Double Six, but don't recall any of them being in any way known. The only band I remember were called the Berlin Blondes, who drew heavily on Bowie imagery. I think I only remember them because they were so awful. I don't know how The Rezillos passed me by - I'd definitely have seen them if I'd known.
I was at the Albertos gig - 21 June '78. If you remember some fool going to the front to announce to the singer that it was his birthday - that was me! High point of the night was support act John Dowie's 'British Tourist' song - lowpoint was the attempted skinhead invasion.
