A place to celebrate all things related to The Van Gogh. If anyone has great memories of nights there, this is to place to share them. Similarly, any live recordings etc!

Without a doubt The Van Gogh was the most influencial place for me and the bands i played in. Everybody supported each other it was like one big "happy family", it didn't matter how many times you played everyone would be there having a good time. Places for punk bands to play at that time were very thin on the ground and so The Van Gogh was such an important venue for so many people.

The Van Gogh was a great place, we all seemed to play there every week. As you say it was exactly like a happy family. everyone used to borrow each others instruments and even their members at times well except that the tight bastard that was Grinders Bass player wouldn't lend me his bass once when the Vandals did a couple of numbers unexpectedly. He played in my place and I had to watch from the sidelines !

The Vicars used to play at The Van Gogh quite a lot, enough to make anyone feel like chopping an ear off I suspect. For some reason I didn`t have a guitar at the time, probably sold it to buy beer, can`t remember. Either Deano or Warren used to lend me a very cool salmon pink Fender Strat which served admirably.
How come Grinders bass player wouldn`t lend you his bass? What did he think you were going to do with it?
They had a record out at the time called "Wickford`s so Boring", no doubt inspired by the fact that it was populated by the sort of anal thingys who couldn`t see fit to help out a fellow punk in her hour of need by lending her a much needed bass. In my view he could have made Wickford seem a much more interesting place by not being such a prick, so there.

Me (Mick Overton) Clive Kemp and Mark Parish (The Stupidz) used to walk to the Van Gogh from Wickford and sometimes got home again! I remember Sue Pagett writing ARSE on my self decorated trousers which finished them off nicely. Great days and nights.
