Southend Punk was saddened to hear of the passing of legendary local Guitarist & Vocalist Nick Paul of The Machines. Nick predated the Punk explosion with his early band - Raw Power - which he formed in 1974, and was later an early witness to the nascent UK Punk scene, seeing the Sex Pistols at The 100 Club Punk Festival, early gigs at The Roxy by The Clash, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers and many more. Suitably inspired, in early 1977 Nick started writing a set of songs and formed The Machines, with Duf & John Dee, and the band would go on to play at London Punk Clubs The Vortex & The Roxy. In 1978 they recorded the seminal 'True Life' EP for Wax Records before later disbanding that year. Nick continued playing and recording with London based band The Collectors, and in 2005/2006 re-formed The Machines, with Stephen 'Tash' Reddihough on Bass and Steve Pegrum on Drums. They gigged extensively around the UK, eventually releasing an eponymously titled album containing all of their recordings, on Angels in Exile Records in 2011. Nick was an incendiary Guitarist and although he could best be appreciated in the live environment, he leaves behind a legacy of some truly amazing songs. R.I.P.
