Whilst reading the current Noisy (Issue 8), I was intrigued by The Danielle Dax feature, as it reminded me of the fact that she was born in Southend (23.09.58), and in her early years even won a 'Miss Evening Echo' competition in 1976! I wondered if anyone here ever knew her then or indeed a little later saw her band The Lemon Kittens? A later personal favourite has to be 'Cathouse' though - such a good song! I met Danielle Dax a few times, she used to hang out with some 6th formers from Cecil Jones such as Rick Mander, Simon Ellington, etc, circa 1977, although I was a couple of years younger. Her crocodile skin trousers certainly made an impression on me!!
I never saw The Lemon Kittens, but did like them and had a couple of albums by them. I did once bump into Karl Blake on a tube journey after a gig by The Ex and had a chat with him. He also knew Andy Downs from Southend, with whom I did some pre-punk musical collaborations many years ago.... small world!!

I knew Danielle, vaguely, also through Richard and Simon as I was at Cecil Jones with them too. If I remember rightly, the saxaphone was her instrument of choice then. She always seemed like a really nice person. She also put in a brief "blink and you'll miss it" appearance at Southend Tech on the Foundation Arts course in 1977. I seem to remember her being there for about a month (could have been even less) before she upped sticks and moved to London. Next time I heard of her she had become Danielle Dax.

Hi Budgie
I knew Danielle well from around 1974 to the end of 1977 when I left Southend. We nearly shared a birthday, she was one day younger than me - on our 18th birthday we asked loads of people to go the the Top Alex and we went to the Queens Hotel... Seemed pretty cool at the time - seems bloody stupid with hindsight!
Dani and I went to lots of gigs together, quite a range of stuff - Yes at QPR's ground in '75, Alexis Korner at the Railway, Hawkwind at the Kursaal and Humphrey Littleton somewhere in Westcliff - perfect punk credentials.
Somewhere in a box in the attic I have a newspaper cutting of the Southen Miss Evening Echo triumph.
All seems a long time ago.

Hi there Simon - it was in fact in your flat in Warrior Square that I remember Danielle's Croc skin trews! And playing albums like 'Still' by Pete Sinfield out of King Crimson (remember Wholefood Boogie? )... Hope alls well with you, do you still play your Greenslade albums much??? I seem to remmeber you had a fine collection...

I remember seeing The Lemon Kittens, and also saw her play in London in about 82 and in Bristol 88. My 1st dad was a friend of Danielle Dax for a short time. I met her personally at her London after her gig, briefly. I still listen to her music regularly, although only her 1st and 2nd albums mainly - marc garrett
