I was reading Stevets post about singles, and remembered that the record companies gave a lot of stuff away in the days of punk to attract sales, a few I remember are Dr Feelgoods Stupidity album that came with a free single, The Stranglers 1st album that had peasant in the big shitty single and their Black and white LP that came with Walk on by. Anyone remember other free incentives to buy albums?

I remember, and I think still have, the flexi disk by Alternative TV that came free with the last issiue of Sniffing Glue, which I got in Record World on the Soutrhchurch Road.
Also I think I still have the Joy Division Flexi that was given away in 1980,only IIRC Projection Records (next to Nastys in Clifftown Road) were a bit cheeky as you couldn't get a 'free' copy from them unless you bought a Joy Division LP...

Some great records there. The free single with Black and White was on white vinyl if I remember rightly? 'Crash Course' by The UK Subs had a limited edition 12" with early copies too.
The Fanzine/Flexi Disc is an interesting one - I remember the Sniffin' Glue one, and also the Crass 7" flexi 'Rival Tribal' with Toxic Graffiti fanzine.

That single with sniffin glue was Love lies limp, Ive still got it. The Clash gave a flexi disk free to NME readers, a version of capital radio and a track called Listen.I know its not a gift, but what about The Akron album on Stiff? scratch and sniff and it smelt of rubber.

Glitter, stardust in dull, camp form. Hero are you out there, or are you just a shadow?

I had a pair of '3d' glasses that were given away with 'Off the bone' by The Cramps, the sleeve was in that format and I had hours of endless fun looking at it with the glasses. 'The Dignity of Labor' by The Human Leg, whoops sorry Graham, League (made before they went bad) had a flexi disc with Philly, Martin and the other one bitching away. The best gift, however, must be the Crass flexi disc that was given away with some girls magazine or other!

I remember that Stranglers "Walk on by " freebie, it had a track called "Old codger" on the flip, with vocals by George Melly and harp by Lew Lewis, used to get played to death in the Jellicoe, oddly along with Donna Summers "Macarthur Park", at the culmination of which everyone would shout in unison, "Who left that f@cking cake out in the rain"?

Flexi discs in my humble opinion were a waste of time, put them on the turn table line up the stylus and watch the turntable spin, whilst the floppy piece of plastic stayed put......probably due to the state of my stylus, The good old fashion poster was a regular freebee especially the one of Souxie that covered my window to keep light out, free with a much loved bannshees album.
