Wondering if anyone can remember the punk/new wave clothes store 'American Graffitii' that used to be at the far end of the high street as I recall. The whole row of those shops would have been demolished I think. I suppose it would have been opposite what is now the Royals. It moved up to the roundabout on London road but I think changed it's name. If anyone has any photos or memories of this shop, it would be great to here from you.

[glow=red,2,300][/glow] I remember American graffiti I beleive it became NASTY when it moved to london road didnt it have a branch in westcliff as well only very little but i think it was there before it moved into southend high street in front of a car park i recall.I am sure that Steve Hooker had some thing to do with it in the early days.Great shop always had great clothes and stuff saved a fortune on train bunking by not having to travel to kings road etc. Just a note to stevet did you once live in shoebury around 75-76-77,

Hi Tim - American Graffiti started as far as I can remember in 1979 along the London Road, near where The Plough pub is. It then moved to the bottom of the High Street as mentioned above, and was based there circa 1980 - 1981 I think. After that it was at the top of Princes Street, by the London Road Roundabout - not sure when it closed though?
Nasty's is very fondly remembered (See separate thread about Miss 'Diane' Nasty!). I think it started in '78, and it was near Westcliff Station. Steve Hooker was manager there for a while and he even played a gig on the roof in '79 (there's a clipping in the Press section). Then it moved to Clifftown Road and was next to Projection Records for a while, before expanding and taking in the two spaces. There were also branches of Nasty's in Kensington Market and Brighton too!
In the New Year I think I'll try and add in some special info on the shops and will try and interview Diane Nasty for the site!
Hope this helps!

Wow...
I remember American Graffiti. I used to go there and spend my hard earned cash on all kinds of clothes. Does anyone remember a guy who used to work there called Blue Nick - he used to parade around (sometimes) in a Nun outfit. Great times. He used to have Blue hair (of course). He left Southend in the early eighties, I seem to remember - I think it was to study at University.
