Southend Punk was saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary English fashion designer Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood DBE RDI, aged 81. (née Swire; 8th April 1941 – 29th December 2022). Together with her partner at the time, Malcolm McLaren, the couple ran the shop at 430 Kings Road, London firstly under the name Let It Rock, then Too Fast To Live, then the infamous Sex then Seditionaries (December '76 - September ‘80). In late 1980, the shop became World's End, which it has continued as ever since. It was as Seditionaries that I first entered its doors in 1978 and was welcomed by Vivienne and shop assistant Jordan as I browsed and bought some items from the store. I would visit again several times in the coming years, and through part time job wages, constant saving etc managed to buy several lovely items from the store. Living through the violent times of the era and as a counter to the greyness to be found everywhere, wearing their distinctive Black bondage trousers, Destroy / Anarchy in the UK & God Save The Queen muslin long sleeve shirts really made me feel invincible and immortal, and that feeling has never, and will never go away and Vivienne will always hold a place in my heart forever.
