Whilst reading Andrew Matheson's entertaining book 'Sick on You' about his band The Hollywood Brats, it was interesting to note that early in their career in 1972 they played in Southend at what Andrew describes as ...'Altamont on the Estuary'...and that...'The joint is full and getting fuller. Black Leather and chains and jeans, brothel creepers, winkle pickers'...
I wondered if anyone was there or indeed knew the venue? I would imagine it to be either The Queens, The Minerva or possibly that bar that existed halfway down Pier Hill?

You'd imagine it was The Minerva, if it was The Queens you'd emerge onto the suburban streets of Westcliff-on-Sea or the shops of Hamlet Court Road, from The Minerva you'd be right on the seafront and if it was summer in 1972 it would be busy, Kiss me quick hats, Kursaal open, fish and chips, coach parties the whole lot.
The bar along Pier Hill was The Long Bar, it was resurrected in the '80's I think it was, I saw Bushfire there, it had a small stage and dancefloor, think it was popular with squaddies at one time and may have had another name.

Yes, I think from the description in the book it is almost certainly The Minerva or The Long Bar. In the mid 1980's I know the bar along Pier Hill was called 'Shambles' for a while, as Kronstadt Uprising played there in 1986.
