Welcome to Southend Punk Rock History 1976 - 1986. I hope you enjoy your visit - this site has been a labour of love and taken a long time to get online, but is hopefully worth it. It will be an ongoing project and its evolution is dependant upon your contributions, therefore if any of you have photo's, memorabilia etc you wish to see on the site, get in touch and we'll see what we can do.

I don't think I could do a PUnk top 50, mine would be more along the lines of, The Shocks doing a dynamite short set at Shrimpers in a rock competition and getting nowhere, Steve Hooker's pink velvet suit, The Screaming AbDabs doing some songs 3 times at Scamps one night because they didn't have any numbers they could do for encores, Pete Helmer of The Leepers getting a Rickenbacker at some expense which fed back so much it was almost unplayable, traipsing all over Southend and out to Rayleigh just to find venues, The Pinks doing a fantastic set at Scamps one time, best time by far I ever saw them, how hard it was then to actually get a record released, "Captain Strange, he can't come", "Shot by both sides" at Scamps most weeks, The Leepers doing a song called "High Time", The Shocks doing one called "I fell" never recorded as far as I know, Paul Eves chatting up a girl, pointing at some young lads and saying, "fighting, drinkinking, I used to be like that", Dean's frilly shirts...

This is great - so many memories - had to laugh when I saw the ticket from Lindesfarne for the Idiot / Deano's Marvels gig as I have the very same thing stashed away in the attic with a load of fanzines, cuttings and singles - Paul Eves indeed, he couldn't keep his kegs on in the high street on a saturday afternoon . . . Wreckless Eric, X Ray Specs (I think) and Stiff Little Fingers at Southend College . . . Paul Dunne and Barry at Southend Court (I was there on a Fifth form outing from school - how educational was that?!) . . . oh yes and Biba Black Tulip lipstick from the high street . . . well done Steve.

Great Site, loads of memories. If anyone remembers me (well the ones that remember me fondly that is!!)get in touch at stevetcsc@hotmail.com
Enjoyed looking through the photos, so many faces. Got into punk in 77/78, hung around with Martin Skine (RIP), Mark Brett, Mark Bristow, Ralph Malph, and Vicky (who nicknamed me Devo) and Karen. Remember getting cider from Caters/Prestos, lots of illegal substances !!, and great memories. Later on went out with Helen, and DJed at Electric Blue and then Swag Club, with Steve the King Kurt Fan. Had some great Sat night at Crocs/Toothbrush, then getting bus back to Southend.
Would love to know what eveyones up to Steve Thorogood

Ah, the trip to The London Dungeon.... in no particular order, I remember; girls weeing in a bucket behind a caravan on the East India Dock Road, dismantling the exhibits, rumour of a stabbing during the gig (although it may have happened), someone nicking my zippo (and if I ever find out who did it I'll have their bollocks for ear-rings), more substances of many various kinds going round the bus than has been known to man in one location, nudity, more nudity, having the piss taken for wearing a "rockabilly shirt" and was that the trip with the smashed in window and we all got chucked off by OB while they did some chin-stroking and stuff? (Was the glass inside or outside the coach - I don't think they ever got to grips with that particularly difficult poser - a two pipe problem Watson......)
And what about the Nasty bus to Trafalger Square on New Year's Eve? (1981?) Climbing the fountain (and us being included on a Madness video) kissing policewomen, getting on the wrong coach, riotous singing all the way there and all the way back, and the first and last appearance of Adam Ant make up on a person who shall remain nameless (mainly because I've forgotten his name), and the obligatory fumblings, deviant practices and plain nudity on the back seat. Anyone else on that bus? (If so I may have a ripped stocking and the remains of a packet of 10 Guards fags that belong to you).

I know some of you remember Jan, whom I married, she's still around, but in deepest Essex. Any way...hope to hear from some of you soon.

This may be a v long shot, but did you do a residential art course in Thaxted with Alf many moons ago? If not; please ignore me. Actually, on balance, probably best to ignore me anyway..... :-)

Aha! Yup - I was there, I reckon it must have been circa 1976? There were three of you girls, you, Alf and A.N. Other. I remember your T shirt which, handily, had the word "Sue" on the front - I still haven't worked out why..... It wasn't a school thing, and there were people from all over the world (but mainly London....). I was the one who had a fight in the TV room over The Beatles film; Hard Day's Night. OK, I do appreciate there are probably more worthwhile causes to fight over than films, but hey. You nicked my sunglasses for the whole week too, and, you said you fancied me just as we were being picked up to be taken home......but it was too late! Oh, the heart wrenching issues for a teenage boy. Oh the memories! (Probably) I think it was what people did in those days while they were waiting for punk to happen. The course came in handy for doing fanzines and T shirts and badges and stuff (OK, it probably didn't because I can't remember anything I did apart from snogging and fighting and sneaking off to the offy to buy Pomagne (we were very sofistikated you know)....)

I am still in contact with Rik Wheatley from the basildon crew. Just to let you know the Spurts are reforming for one more gig (nearly 30 years since the last),at bar lambs (southend) sunday 8th april, hope you can make it.
