The more time passes, the more it strikes me how amazing it was that one of the first early punk festivals took place on our doorstep. We know about CBGB's festivals, the 100 Club punk festival and even the Mont de Marsan festivals in France, but little is known or spoken about regarding 'City Rock '77'. John Peel was the DJ, Slaughter and The Dogs, Doctors of Madness, Solid Waste, Fruit Eating Bears, Lew Lewis, Eddie and The Hot Rods (featuring a guest appearance by MC5 singer Rob Tyner!) and more appeared. Apparently, Tony Marshall has mentioned footage from it has even appeared in a punk documentary, so there must be more out there. Here at SouthendPunk, there are some great photos by Steve Manuell: www.southendpunk.com/html/cityrock.htmland The NME's report on it: www.southendpunk.com/html/cityro77.htmlIf anyone who was there has any further media from it, or even just memories they'd like to share, drop us a line and let us know. Steve

Oh the wonders of the internet....The documentary series was called 'The Punk Years', and you can even download it here or hereabouts...
ttp://thepiratebay.org/tor/3239477/The_Punk_Years_Documentary_Episodes_1__amp__2_SVCD
I'll let the guy who uploaded it take up the story....
"This is an amazing documentary series that was shown on the satellite channel Play UK in 2002 shortly before it closed down. This is the only documentary that actually covers all punk rock right from the Sex Pistols up to Bad Religion, it has interviews with loads of people. Johnny Rotten, Steve Ignorant, Penny Rimbaud, Billy Bragg, Mark Perry and so many more. This is a must for all fans of punk rock, there will be opinions you agree with and ones you don't. This is a download you all need to see, its your history after all."
And - I'm at the end of Episode 7....at City Rock

I drink with Dave Higgs ( Former guitarist/songwriter with the Hot rods) every weekend, and he told me a humourous story about Rob Tyner at that gig, but I cant remember it just now. Something to do with mistaken identity, I'll get him to re-iterate it next week. Also, the Rods did a single with him (Rob Tyner) under a psuedonysm, I'll get the details of that as well.

I've got the single you're referring to...
Robin Tyner & the Hot Rods - "Till the Night is Gone (Lets Rock)"
This is what it says on the back of the sleeve:
"Robin Tyner, lead singer with Detroit's MC5, came to Britain in September, a visit prompted by the re-release of the band's three albums. . .the New Musical Express commissioned him to write about the new British bands, including Eddie & The Hot Rods. . . Tyner met up with the Rods at an open-air concert in Chelmsford, and ended the day joining the band for an encore of "Back In The U.S.A." . . . a few nights later, on September 20, Tyner and the Rods went into the studio to cut "Till The Night Is Gone (Let's Rock)" followed, two days later, by "Flip-side Rock". . . .the result of those sessions is in your hands right now . . . the record features Robin Tyner (vocals), Steve Nicol (drums, back-up vocals), Paul Gray (bass), Graeme Douglas (guitar, back-up vocals), Barrie Masters, Sheila Martian, Eve Dadomo (back-up vocals) . . . vocal arrangements by Robin Tyner and production by Tyner with Steve Lillywhite & Ed Hollis . . . Co-ordination by Howard Thompson."
My copy seems to be some kind of mis-pressing, though, because it's got the A-side - "Till The Night Is Gone (Let's Rock)" on both sides!

I downloaded episode 7 & 8 from that link above, and can confirm that it does work, and it's not a link to a Russian Mafia 'steal-your-bank-account' site.
Th City Rock coverage is sparse (except of course for the bit with me in it), and a lot of it is 'big names' moaning about everyone else not being as 'original' as they are. Still, some nice archive footage in there nonetheless, and the other episodes, while not covering City Rock, are still interesting.
