On Saturday December 18th 1976, The Anarchy in The UK Tour (Featuring The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned and Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers) was due to appear at The Kursaal Ballroom in Southend. Sadly, this event never happened owing to the furore and subsequent backlash caused after The Sex Pistols appearance on the 'Today' program with Bill Grundy on Wednesday December 1st 1976, and the gig was cancelled. National Posters were printed for the tour: www.southendpunk.com/html/anarchyt.htmlAdverts appeared in the music press: www.southendpunk.com/html/anarchy1.htmlWhilst in conversation with Strange Stories Editor Richard Seager a while ago, he raised an interesting question - he'd bought a ticket for the gig (sadly lost in various house moves over the years) and we wondered if a local poster was ever produced for the gig? If anyone knows, has a copy of the poster, or even a copy of the aforementioned elusive ticket for the gig, then please get in touch via the usual address here at Southend Punk - we'd love to hear from you and include a scan on the site. Thanks! Steve

And so began the emise of the Kursall as a viable Music venue IMHO
Mind you the touble with the Teds in the west end and the proximity of the Minerva would not have helped the councils decision in any way

Has anybody seen a Ted lately? I live quite near Camden Town where every youth movement from skin/suedeheads to punks, mods, soulboys and neo rockabillys are liberally represented. Not to mention Goths, New Romantics and Emus but nary a Ted do I see. I know they were our sworn enemy back in the day but it seems a shame that the original British teenage rebels have finally bitten the dust.
By God if I still had hair I would sweep it back into a greasy DA in tribute to our gallant foes just for the hell of it.

Hmm, just reading Jon Savages 'Englands Dreaming Tapes', the interview with John Lydon would suggest that the 'banning' of many of the gigs post-Grundy was actually one of McLaren's 'marketing ploys', although I havn't read all of the book yet.
