'Jubilee', the film directed by Derek Jarman, released in 1978, and often cited as "Britains' first official punk movie" interestingly has Southend Punk connections. Anne-Marie Farmer recently mentioned that Neil Jordan saw a group of Punks at a gig in London and asked them to be in the film, and that these included Jackie and Vanessa, Gary, Dick and Earl who were some of the earliest Southend Punks. There are images from a section of the rear sleeve of the Jubilee album (inc a great shot of Wayne County!), and an image from a newspaper article at the time about Jubilee, at: www.southendpunk.com/html/jubileef.html

I went to school with Vanessa from 1972 - 77, and still remember the shock and outrage she caused circa 1976 by becomming a punk, this was in the days when it was really new and still very culturally transgressive, with talk of punk being 'the end of civilisation' (seriously!) in the air. I met her at a school reunion 'do' a few years ago and mentioned to her that she was on the cover of Jubilee, she claimed to be totally unaware of this. She did however say that she thought Derek Jarman was 'a right w***er'
