Glad someone else remembered the Saint/ Eastwood gig, i know my memories are very hazey but i was sure it did happen! If i remember rightly we were at some southend tec end of term piss up at Annabellas before hand. It was a great gig as there was no actual stage, so we were just dancing right in front of them. The album "Two bad DJ" had just come out so i think it was definatly '81. They did a killer version of 'Talk about run'

Just back from the time machine, Clint Eastwood and General Saint, Raquels in Basildon 12th May 1983 and with Charas supporting both times Crocs on 11th Nov. and Southend College 13th Dec 1983. The same band 3 times in 7 months and drawing a crowd each time. Unbelievable

Graham - that Crass gig - was it the one they did completely in the dark? I remember seeing them with Andy W and he drove in an old Morris Oxford (?) car which you could see the road through the bottom. Hmm, I may be getting confuddled here, but I do remember saying to someone that I had just "seen" Crass and thinking that actually, I had not seen them at all since it was so dark (not "normal" dark, but actually pitch black dark).

I think that may have been the Stowmarket Crass gig, which I didn't make it to. I remember Andy Whitting organising a lift up there, but for some reason I couldn't go... Wasn't there some trouble with some bikers or something at that gig?
I remeber i also missed the Crass gig in hastings, I was going to go, but at the time was going out with Sheena and she wouldn't let me, I remember her saying "don't you think you've seen Crass enough times for one week..."

My most memorable gig would have to be the Damneds farewell bash at the Rainbow 78? Captain Sensible was naked the whole night exept for a large inflatable dinosaurs tail, which the crowd eventually ripped off of him. Another great night was seeing Ultravox (pre- Midge Ure) at Chancelor Hall Chelmsford.......

for me, the most memorable gig in the local area was Bad Brains at Crocs. Simply awsome power and ear melting volume. The first punk band I saw was The Dark at Shrimpers, just after Hawaii 5-0 came out...the first band i ever saw was Dr. Feelgood somewhere on Canvey Island.

Scamps had a few memorable gigs. The Ruts ;Dplayed there shortly after "In a Rut" came and gave a fantastic performance even though there was only a handful of people there. I also remember strolling into a Sta Prest gig there and as we were walking up the stairs hearing Tenpole tudor launch into a set, appearing unbilled as the third band. It turned out that the Kingston siblings were having a joint gig - the Mo-dettes were second on the bill. Tenpole Tudor returned shortly after to headline.

Ear melting volume. In my experience every gig at Crocs/The Toothbrush was at ear melting volume, I saw Turkey Bones and The Wild Dogs there and thought my teeth were going to fall out of my head at one point, would carry a government health warning these days.

For me the Strange stories benifit gigs were some of the best gigs I saw, The Esplanade with a great line up of bands in one night, Steve Hooker, Speedball, Deno, The Psychos, Savage & more I cant remember.

Being Billericay based I only ventured down to Southend for the football but the most memorable gigs with a Southend connection for me are The Chords / Speedball at the Valkyrie. March of the Mods tour August 79 at Canvey paddocks. Damned and the Vicars at Crocs. I was at the Jam Rainbow gig the day before the live recording They let the audience take over during Tube Station and the audience cocked it up, I remember a mob of Southend Mods joining us for a correct version in the foyer afterwards.

I remember that G.B.H. gig at crocs as the loudest thing i've ever heard, had ringing ears for days.
Most fun had to be King Kurt at crocs, what a mess, i remember liberating the tampon disposal bin from the ladies loo.
