I once had a choice of seeing The damned at the Queens or Soft Machine in London, both of which I really wanted to see. In the end I stayed at home and revised for an exam which I failed anyway...

Mmmm, tricky one. There are obviously several, and given a time machine I'd certainly go to David Bowie (with Mick Ronson and The Spiders) at the Cricketers in the very early 1970's, T Rex at the Cliffs, the aforementioned Mott/Queen gig, but the key local one that I'd love to have seen would probably be the one that didn't actually happen - ie The 'Anarchy' Tour that was due to play here on 18.12.76 with The Sex Pistols, Clash + Johnny Thunders at The Kursaal - what a line-up!

I got to the Mott/Queen gig at the Kursaal. Mott were a bit jaded, but Queen were amazing. Of course they went downhill rapidly from there!

I apologise but there seems to be too much reminising about "Hippy" Bands. Thank fck for punk or else we would all be talking about Gong, The Floyd, Hawkwind !!!!

Was that Joy Division at the ULU? I was going to go to that one as well, but couldn't be bothered, at the time I seemed to be going to loads of 'post-punk' gigs such as Raincoats, Pop Group, Scritti polliti, Slits, Swell Maps, The Fall, etc, etc.
I was taking it all rather for granted and thought, "ar, cant be arsed, I'll go and see them next time..." A few weeks later Ian Curtis was dead... Wasn't ULU thier last ever gig?

Well I always kind of thought that punk was just carrying on the traditions of hippy (and before that the Beats) anyway, creative postive alternatives to the mainstream and all that. Hawkwind and Gong were always part of that and have still kept the faith, even to this day (eg, Here & Now, who played Zero 6 with ATV were kind of Gong with punk aesthetics, and there are still various incarnations of Gong floating about I believe...), though I'd agree that Pink Floyd are corporate rawk dinosaurs and always were ever since dark Side of the Moon...

And of course Crass were always (and still are!) unashamedly a bunch of old hippys anyway! Ask Penny Rimbaud;

yeah i guess, its just that my brother was a hippy, he is only 18 months older than me, but i had to endure Gong, Peter Hamill, Hawkwind etc, which was ok until the pistols changed that. The atttitude was the same, but it was thepure aggression of the music that was different.
